I spoke with my 85 year old mom today. She's energetic, athletic, bright as a whip, and completely independent. In the middle of our conversation about whether if she thought of moving to a 55+ community, her neighbor called. It reminded me that a home isn’t just walls and furniture, it’s the community you build, the relationships you nurture, and the small, everyday connections that make life feel rich and full.

She loves her home. She loves her independence. She loves the life she’s created with the people around her. And in that moment, I realized that transitioning into retirement isn’t just about finding a new home. It’s about deciding how you want to live, and who you want by your side along the way.

Later, when my family was growing and we moved to Ventura County, we bought another home that fit that season. More space. More activity. More life happening inside those walls. Then there was the home that represented a shift; downsizing slightly, reducing maintenance, reclaiming time. I remember consciously thinking, I don’t want to spend every weekend maintaining a house. And now? I’m in what I call my pre-retirement home. It’s clean, safe, low maintenance, in a neighborhood with kind neighbors and easy freeway access.

There are no regrets. Each house matched a chapter. I may have just officially started my real estate career, but real estate has been part of my entire adult life. Every decision was tied to growth, family, time, energy, and intention.

Sometimes I wonder if I moved into a 55+ community in Ventura County, would I enjoy built-in community with people in the same life stage? Would there be more spontaneous connection? Shared interests? Less maintenance? At the same time, there’s something grounding about staying in a home you love.
